Backend Engineer – Compilers & Programming Languages

Location: Fully remote, India

Salary: £18,000–£30,000 per annum, depending on experience

Vacancies: 2

MFK Recruitment is working with an ambitious HealthTech company to recruit two Backend Engineers based in India.

This is an opportunity to tackle complex engineering challenges while building technology that helps bring medicines and medical devices to patients more efficiently and safely.

I have personally recruited 13 Engineers for this company over the past four years, and 12 are still with the business. Having helped build their engineering team, I can offer candidates a detailed understanding of the company, its culture and the opportunities available.

The opportunity

Our client develops software and AI tools that help pharmaceutical companies, medical device businesses and regulatory authorities analyse and validate clinical trial evidence.

Its platform connects documentation, programming code, data and statistical results, making complex clinical research easier to understand, trace and review.

As a Backend Engineer, you will work on the technology behind this platform. You will develop parsers and compiler components that analyse programming languages such as SAS, R and Python, then transform the results into graphs and other data structures.

Your work will help users understand how clinical trial results were produced, trace the relationships between code and data, and use AI tools to support analysis and validation.

Candidates with around 2–5 years of relevant experience would be particularly well suited, but strong graduates with relevant projects, internships or research experience are also encouraged to apply.

What you’ll be doing

  • Developing and extending parsers, compiler components and code analysis tools.
  • Building backend functionality using Java and/or TypeScript.
  • Transforming code, data and statistical outputs into graphs and related data structures.
  • Implementing algorithms that support code traceability and data lineage.
  • Contributing to the analysis, design, development and testing of platform components.
  • Investigating complex bugs, identifying root causes and implementing reliable fixes.
  • Improving the performance and scalability of analysis pipelines and backend services.
  • Working closely with other engineers to prioritise and deliver functionality.
  • Writing clear, maintainable code, automated tests and supporting documentation.

What we’re looking for

We’re interested in engineers who enjoy understanding how programming languages work and solving challenges that require careful reasoning.

You should bring:

  • Strong programming skills in Java or TypeScript, alongside experience with at least one other programming language.
  • Practical experience with, or a strong demonstrable interest in, parsing algorithms, interpreters, compilers or programming language design.
  • A clear understanding of graph theory, algorithms and data structures, with the ability to apply these in code.
  • A methodical approach to debugging and investigating complex technical issues.
  • An understanding of software performance and scalability.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to explain technical decisions.
  • A collaborative approach, curiosity and a willingness to take ownership of your work.
  • A commitment to testing, documentation and continuous improvement.

For graduates, evidence from substantial personal projects, university work, research, internships or contributions to open-source software will be considered.

Useful additional experience

The following would be beneficial:

  • ANTLR4 or similar parsing frameworks.
  • SAS or R.
  • Python or R execution environments and interpreted language runtimes.
  • Static analysis, code analysis or data lineage.
  • Graph-based representations of code and data.

The technology

The wider platform uses Java, TypeScript, Next.js and Python, with ANTLR4 supporting code analysis. Infrastructure and delivery tools include Docker, Kubernetes, Argo Workflows, Git and GitHub Actions.

You do not need experience with every technology in the stack.

What’s on offer

  • £18,000–£30,000 annual salary, depending on experience.
  • Fully remote working from India.
  • An Employee Stock Options Plan.
  • The opportunity to work with an international engineering team.
  • Technically challenging work with a direct connection to medical research and human health.
  • A culture that values ownership, candid communication, collaboration and continuous learning.
